BRISBANE, Australia (7 July 2022) – The number of people in Australia reporting their religion as Islam has grown to 813,392, comprising 3.2% of the total Australian population, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said in a 28 June media release.
The Muslim population grew 35% from 604,000 reported in Census 2016. There were 200,900 Muslims according to Census 1996 making up 1.1% of the population and in 1991 only 147,500 people reported their religion as Islam.
Christianity which has been the dominant religion in Australia now forms 43.9% of the population, having declined from 52.1% in Census 2016, 74% in Census 1991 and 88% in Census 1996.
Increasing number of Australians reported no faith with the number reporting to have no religion increasing to 38.9%, up from 30.1% in Census 2016 and 22.3% in Census 2011.-/-www.halaluniverse.net
